While concealer is designed to cover flaws, applying it incorrectly can have the opposite effect

While you may have carried your makeup routine through your 20s and 30s, according to one expert, the 40s may require slightly different strategies.

Makeup artist Kate (who goes by @katetalbertmua on TikTok) divulged a concealer secret for women in this age group, advising against heavy application under the eyes.

Applying a thick layer of product to her under-eye area, the makeup guru stated: "This is the biggest concealer mistake that I see women over 40 make.

"It's going in and applying concealer that is far too light all through this area right here.

"And I understand why you do it, because you think that's where you want coverage - that's where you want those dark circles to be lightened.

"But what we have to understand is that the skin right here is the thinnest skin on our entire face."

She explained that by applying a concealer that is too light to this specific area, you are "highlighting every little imperfection".

Kate added that this application method can also accentuate any under-eye puffiness a woman may have.

Now this doesn't mean that women over 40 should ditch concealer entirely. Rather, they must only use a shade that flatters their skin tone and make sure to apply it strategically.

Instead of caking the concealer on, Kate suggested applying dots of the product in three specific areas before using a brush to blend them in.

According to the expert, the magic concealer spots are just below the under-eye, the top of the side of your nose and just above the outer corner of the eye.

She explained: "If you feel these spots, guess what? They're dense. They've got some bone underneath them."

If you have dark under-eye circles you want to cover, it's fine to blend the product into this area - just don't concentrate the product here initially.

Kate said: "You'll notice that you're not going to have nearly as much creasing, it's not going to cake and you're going to get better coverage because it matches your skin tone."

She added that this technique does not highlight fine lines, wrinkles or any texture.

There are many ways women can use makeup to improve their appearance. An expert named the product that can make a "huge difference" to women over 50.
