Hyaluronic acid is an ingredient in skin care products that can make your face appear plump and youthful

Hyaluronic acid is a great ingredient to look for in your skin care products as it enhances hydration and the radiance of the skin.

An expert has shared why it is worth adding to your daily routine, but why you should also be "cautious" when using.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Teoxane ambassador Dr Christine Hall said: "Hyaluronic acid is a skin care stalwart, highly regarded for its unparalleled ability to attract and retain moisture, making it a key ingredient for achieving hydrated, plump skin.

"It works by drawing water into the skin and holding it there, which helps to improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

“Hyaluronic acid can enhance the skin’s overall texture and radiance, making it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin.

"Its hydrating properties also support the skin's natural barrier function, promoting a healthier and more resilient complexion.

"Hyaluronic acid is a well-tolerated skin care ingredient and so layering HA products can amplify this hydrating effect, as each additional layer draws in and locks in more moisture, leading to longer lasting and more noticeable results.

"Layering multiple HA products can potentially boost the moisture-binding effects of hyaluronic acid, leading to plumper, more hydrated skin."

The expert suggested looking for and layering multiple skin care products featuring this ingredient as this could lead to longer-lasting hydration.

The doctor continued: "I recommend applying a hyaluronic acid-based serum, followed up with a moisturiser and eye cream that also contain hyaluronic acid.

“Choose products with different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to ensure deeper penetration and longer-lasting hydration.

"Hyaluronic acid can be combined with retinol, peels, other acids and vitamins, and it is compatible with a wide range of skin treatments."

While it will work wonders for many people's skin, Dr Hall said there are some downsides to using too much of the product as it will no longer be effective.

She continued: "However, be cautious, as too much hyaluronic acid can dry your skin by drawing moisture from wherever it can, including the deeper layers of your skin.

"Skin can become saturated and at this point, anything you apply will just sit on the skin's surface and occlude. To avoid this happening, apply multiple thin layers of product, which aids absorption vs a single thick layer.

"You can also stack hyaluronic acid dermal fillers with topical HA products, such as Teoxane Teosyal RHA ®, which prioritises natural facial movements, delivering subtle, genuine results by replicating lost hyaluronic acid.

"HA dermal fillers are used to provide volume and reduce wrinkles through deeper, more sustained hydration beneath the skin, while topical HA products offer surface-level moisture and hydration."
