Slugging is a moisturising technique that involves slathering the face with a product that traps moisture

Honing your skin care routine is essential if you want to look younger than your years.

Leonie Barlow, a fashion and beauty magazine editor turned YouTuber, took to the sharing platform to divulge the skin care hack that helps her "look 10 years younger in 10 minutes". She revealed that before going to sleep she practises "slugging".

Leonie told her viewers: "I'm 56 years old and regularly get asked about my best anti-ageing skin care and makeup tips - and today, I'm sharing them all with you.

"This is probably my favourite skin care secret of all and it's one that I've been doing for a number of years."

The skin care enthusiast told her viewers that she uses "slugging" to turn back the clock. This is the practice of "adding a protective layer over your skin care line-up".

She said: "What that protective layer does is it locks in the moisture and enables your skin care products to work a little harder."

When Leonie first started slugging, she used Vaseline. Now, she uses healing ointments from CeraVe and Aquaphor.

The beauty fan said: "Essentially, you do your evening skin care routine. For me, I cleanse, I tone, I put on a serum and then a moisturiser, and directly over that moisturiser I put a small layer of CeraVe's [Healing] Ointment.

"All that does is it locks everything in and it makes sure that your skin care products don't end up on the pillow and don't do what they are supposed to do on your face."

CeraVe provides some helpful information on slugging for those who want to incorporate it into their skin care regimen.

They said: "Slugging is a well-known moisturising technique that involves slathering the face with an occlusive product [that traps moisture and prevents water loss] as the last step in your evening skincare routine.

"Slugging is usually done with a petrolatum-based occlusive, such as CeraVe Healing Ointment.

"Occlusives used for slugging create a physical seal over the skin that traps in moisture and prevents transepidermal water loss. The goal is to promote fresh-looking skin that appears plump and hydrated.

"Slugging is generally considered ideal for those with dry skin. It may not be suitable for acne-prone skin or for individuals prone to blemishes. Seek the help of a board-certified dermatologist for any questions regarding whether or not slugging is right for you." For more information on slugging, including its benefits and how often to do it, skin care enthusiasts can consult CeraVe.
