With so many skin care products on the market, it is not always clear which will help you achieve your goals.
If you are looking to smooth your complexion, reduce visible wrinkles and promote collagen, a doctor shared one ingredient to look out for.
Speaking exclusively to GB News, Dr Hannah Kopelman recommended retinoids as some of the best ingredients to turn back the years on your face.
She said: "Incorporating retinoids into your nightly skin care routine can make a significant difference.
Products can help smooth wrinkles
GETTY"Retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A, are proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin texture by stimulating collagen production."
Studies have shown retinoids can help the skin produce more collagen - a protein in the body that naturally depletes as we age.
Having more collagen can make the skin appear plumper, which in turn means wrinkles and fine lines are less visible.
Retinoids are found in various moisturisers, serums and skin care treatments, but using too much too quickly could damage your skin.
That's why Dr Kopelman suggested starting with a small amount and building up when your tolerance improves.
The expert continued: "I advise starting with a lower concentration to allow your skin to adjust and gradually increasing as tolerated."
Another way to ensure your skin looks plump is to keep it hydrated. Drinking plenty of water and using a good moisturiser will help with this.
When finding the right moisturiser for anti-ageing, Dr Kopelman said it is best to look out for one with three hydrating ingredients.

"I suggest using a good moisturiser that suits your skin type. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides are excellent for retaining moisture and keeping your skin plump."
What we put in our bodies can be just as important as what is applied topically to reduce the signs of ageing. One woman credited her young, glowing skin to one hot drink that she described as the "fountain of youth".
