While dark lipstick shades are undeniably eye-catching, they may be making you look older than you are

Makeup can take years off your face if you have the right know-how. According to a former model, a strategic lipstick application can have a transformative effect.

Vicky Derosa (@vicky.derosa on TikTok) took to the sharing platform to reveal the lipstick colour she uses to look younger in seconds. She advised swapping darker shades for lighter hues.

Vicky Derosa took to TikTok to divulge her "one secret that will make you look instantly younger".

She said: "I learnt this when I was modelling - people have been talking about this for ages and I don't know why everyone doesn't do it.

"Dark lipstick - I'm sure - looks fabulous, red lipstick looks amazing. It's funny when I was modelling, they almost put red lipstick on me - I don't know why.

"The one thing that's going to make you look instantly younger: lighten your lipstick.

"It's not that I never wear dark lipstick - I mean, you guys have seen red on me a few times - but if you want to instantly make that shift and look younger, go with light lipstick and see the difference."

She advised women to take a picture of themselves wearing dark lipstick and then a lighter lipstick, urging them to "please trust me on this".

While bright, bold lipstick can have the wow factor, you run the risk of accentuating the lip thinness associated with ageing, according to the experts at Apropos Day Spa.

Louder colours can also draw attention to fine lines around the lips. Lighter colours, on the other hand, can detract from these signs of ageing,

Many women in the comments section agreed with Vicky. One makeup enthusiast said: "You are absolutely right. I have thrown out all my dark lipsticks (kept the reds for special occasions)."

A second agreed: "I am 61 and have only worn light lipstick for the last 20 years or so and women compliment me on my lip colour all the time - but I think it's because I have naturally big lips."

A third stated: "I love red lipstick but I agree, it is ageing. A lighter lip colour is also more forgiving when it comes off. Red can leave uneven staining so it requires more applications."

One social media user made the case for ditching lipstick altogether. She said: "I stopped wearing lipstick the day I realised my own natural lip colour was the actual 'natural' colour I kept searching for in stores. A bit of lip balm and I'm good to go!"
