Before getting curtain bangs, it's important to think about whether they will suit your face shape

The wrong haircut can be prematurely ageing, but with the right tweaks, you can look younger instantly.

A renowned hairstylist shared a hair mistake he's found from spending decades behind the chair. He urged women to avoid making a particular mistake if they're considering getting curtain bangs.

Justin Hickox, who has been a hairstylist since 1995 and owned his own salon since 2000, shared a hair faux pas that is "ageing you faster".

Curtain bangs, a wispy style of fringe that frames the face and is parted in the middle, have grown exponentially in popularity.

But according to Justin, there's a right way of going about getting this style - and a very wrong way.

Before going for this trendy chop, it's important to think about whether it will suit you.

While it is a very popular look at the moment, it isn't for everyone. This doesn't mean no type of bangs will suit you - there are many types to experiment with.

The expert said: "I'm not saying that all curtain bangs are bad - but doing curtain bangs without paying attention to your face shape can be a huge mistake.

"Curtain bangs have definitely become popular over the past couple of years and they definitely aren't losing any traction right now, so I can understand the draw to them.

"But before you move into them, you kind of need to know how they're going to affect your face shape.

"It plays a huge role in how things are flattering or if they are flattering."

Justin explained that curtain bangs require you to part your hair down the centre, which "makes it impossible to create any sort of volume on top".

Flatness at the top can in turn create the illusion of volume at the sides, which can be "especially problematic" if you have longer hair.

He explained: "The layers are going to be forced to be longer to keep them balanced with the overall length.

"This can mean a lot of heaviness on the sides and actually end up creating a very triangular shape."

According to Justin, this "brings the eye down" and fails to accentuate a woman's best features.

He continued: "You want to lift the eye up, which helps to accentuate your cheekbones and bone structure, and lift the face."

Before committing to curtain bangs, it's always advisable to consult a hairstylist for their professional opinion on how you can best rock the look or if an alternative style will be more flattering.

Justin also weighed in on the short hair mistake that could age you fast and be a "disaster".
