A good complexion comes from more than just your skin care regime

A well-honed skin care regime will brighten your skin and can even help you to look years younger.

However, this is not all you need to consider if you want to brighten your skin and give it a healthy glow.

Sleep and exercise are also crucial, according to clinic lead at Face the Future Kimberley Medd. Being well-rested and developing a good sleep routine has many benefits, with your skin being one of those.

Kimberley explained: "Don't sleep on beauty rest. It's important to get enough sleep every day and to stick to a strong sleep routine if you don't already have consistency when it comes to this.

"The rate at which our skin cells repair and regenerate almost doubles at night, meaning that as we sleep our cells are able to rebuild, repair and heal themselves.

"When we sleep the blood flow in our body parts including skin increases significantly, leading to glowing skin and helping to remove skin dullness."

If you struggle to get to sleep at night, an expert shared the afternoon drink to ditch which can lead to a better night's rest.

Exercise is also more important than people may realise for your skin, as it boosts circulation and helps remove impurities.

Kimberley continued: "It might sound like the opposite of what you'd think, but sweating is a necessary element to having good skin.

"The skin is the body’s largest organ of elimination, and it plays a vital role in the transformation, detoxification and removal of harmful compounds.

"To action your skintox, you want to get your heart rate up and exercising boosts circulation and lymph flow to enhance the elimination of impurities. Working out also burns fat, the body’s primary storage unit for toxins."

When it comes to applying your products, the skin pro suggested using moisturiser at least twice a day, especially in the winter months.

"If your skin is having small breakouts, heightened skin sensitivity or has excessive oil or skin dryness, taking time to detox your skin can help to combat these issues to regain balance and optimal skin health.

"A healthy skin barrier is important to maintain all year round to support the skin against all changes from hormonal to environmental.

"Applying moisturiser twice a day as a minimum, especially in the winter months/cold weather is important to protect the skin from the environment to avoid dry skin.

"Moisturising is also crucial for dry skin in order to help the skin heal and for skin cell turnover, providing it a hydrating environment to repair.

"If the skin is irritated, dry skin can make it more prone to itching, redness and it can slow down the healing process."
