Certain hairstyles may not be doing your look any favours, according to a beauty enthusiast
It becomes increasingly difficult to retain the thickness and shine of hair as the body ages, but certain tricks can help.
Schellea Fowler, claims that keeping bulk at the bottom of your hair, enhancing texture, and choosing the right length do wonders for the appearance after 50.
The YouTuber has become a poignant voice for women looking to improve their looks as they navigate menopause.
In a recent video, Schellea listed different factors to consider when choosing a hairstyle in your golden years.
Shorter hair creates more opportunity to add volume

It's natural for texture to change over time, but these changes will vary hugely depending on your hair type, she explained.
"I get so many comments from people about my hair," noted Schellea. "Some of them say your hair is great, but some of them say 'cut your hair off, it's making you look so old'.
"The first rule is, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, your hair is about you and your personality."
The best hair length for your appearance hinges partly on the type of texture you have, said the YouTuber.
"If your hair is frizzy, you've got different rules to if your hair is straight, and if your hair is thick, you've got different rules to if your hair is fine," explained Schellea.
"If you've got hair that's fine and straight, you probably want to find ways to add volume to it.
"It's much easier to add volume to shorter hair in that case, because the longer it is, the more it gets pulled down, and the more fine and straight it's going to appear.
"When you cut your hair you can get way more volume in it by adding product."
It is equally important to ensure the texture of your skin is somewhat reflected in the texture of your hair, added Schellea.
Adding texture to the hair, in the form of short feathered layers or varying lengths, can create "better harmony" in the appearance.

"But if you've got sleek shiny hair that perfect, when you're older, there's going to be more of a contrast between the look of your face and the perfectness of your hair.
"It looks amazing on some women but most of us can't get away with it."
Ensuring that split ends are frequently removed and that hair is regularly washed will also enhance the appearance of hair, the YouTuber concluded.
