"Consult with your stylist about cuts and treatments that enhance volume," a hairstylist advised

Hair thinning often goes hand in hand with ageing but if you employ the right techniques, luscious locks are totally achievable in your older years.

The process by which the hair thins is very natural. Strands become smaller and lose pigment, so the thick hair you had in your younger years will over time become thinner, finer and lighter in colour.

GB News spoke exclusively to a hairstylist about how women can make their hair look thicker naturally, without extensions.

A strategic chop or colour change can make a world of difference, according to Fausta Urte Geigaite. She said: "Consult with your stylist about cuts and treatments that enhance volume.

"Request a layered haircut to add texture and movement, creating the illusion of fuller hair. Discuss volumising treatments or thickening serums that can provide immediate volume.

"Techniques such as balayage or highlights can also add depth and dimension, making hair appear thicker and more dynamic."

Women can also achieve thicker hair at home with the right products. "When selecting hair products, prioritise those with biotin, which strengthens hair and reduces thinning," suggested Fausta.

"Keratin is another crucial ingredient that restores and maintains hair structure, while hyaluronic acid hydrates and plumps each strand.

"These ingredients collectively improve the texture and volume of hair. Avoid products with sulfates and parabens, as they can strip hair of its natural oils and lead to dryness and damage."

Ladies can also use oils to boost "hair density". The expert said: "Coconut oil is notable for its deep moisturising properties and ability to reduce protein loss from hair strands.

"Argan oil provides essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which improve hair elasticity and shine.

"For a more intensive approach, castor oil is renowned for its ability to enhance blood circulation to the scalp, which can stimulate hair growth and thickness."

Finally, a well-rounded diet is "foundational for enhancing hair thickness". Indeed, one nutritionist seconded this, naming the must-have diet staple for "healthy, shiny" hair - it's "mother nature's perfect food".

Fausta said: "Protein-rich foods such as eggs and lean meats are critical, as hair is primarily made of protein.

"Incorporate fatty acids from sources like salmon and walnuts to strengthen hair and prevent breakage.

"Vitamins and minerals also play a key role. Ensure adequate intake of iron, found in spinach and red meat, and vitamins A and C, which support healthy scalp conditions and sebum production.

"These nutrients collectively work to fortify hair follicles, promoting thicker growth."

Another way to achieve thicker hair is by choosing the right hairstyles that do not cause needless breakage. One celebrity hairstylist named the two popular updos that cause breakage.
