Ladies should only be applying shampoo to their roots and scalp, not their mid-lengths and ends

You may think you have your hair-washing routine down to a tee. However, you could be making a big shampoo mistake.

A hair expert revealed that applying shampoo anywhere but your roots and scalp is a big no-no.

Chris Wenzel (known as Blowout Professor on YouTube) took to the platform to share his expertise.

The hair guru offered ladies his top tips for shampooing correctly. He said: "Shampoo does not go on your mids and ends."

Chris explained that oil is only produced by the scalp - the hair does not produce oil at all. Putting shampoo needlessly on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair could make it look worse.

The expert said: "If you take shampoo and put it on your mids and ends when there's no excess oil, it's going to take the healthy oil out of your hair and dry the heck out of it.

"You don't want to do that. Shampoo only goes on your roots and scalp."

The expert offered a second shampoo tip for women who want to improve their hair.

Chris stressed the importance of the double wash, explaining that "oil does not rinse out".

He said: "If you've ever gotten your hands really greasy on something, you'll know that it takes two washes to get that slippery texture off your hands. It's the same with hair, so two washes.

"The first wash is to get the majority of dirt, oil and build-up off your hair - but no matter what, there's going to be some on there.

"The second wash is where you come in and get everything fully clean. And if you don't get your hair fully clean and you leave some oil in there, it's like the saying 'one bad apple spoils the entire bunch'.

"Your hair is going to get gross really quickly and that's bad because you really want to wait as long as you can before you wash your hair again."

Chris also shared a top tip for making sure your shampoo reaches the right areas.

"When you apply your shampoo, you only want to apply it to your scalp, because the oil is on your scalp," he said.

Placing the shampoo on the top of your head and swirling it around doesn't quite do the job as you don't reach the scalp, where the oil is "hiding".

The expert advised women to split their hair into parts and "press the shampoo all the way down" before massaging it in.

The hair guru also shared the common scalp routine that could be ruining your hair.
