Following a four-step method will help people get their curls

It is very easy to damage your hair when trying to treat it and style it the way you want. Applying too much heat and adding too much water on a very dry scalp are common mistakes people are prone to making.

YouTuber Lana Summer, who specialises in treating hair, discussed the best things for people to do when they want to go from straight to curly.

The YouTuber said: "This is a special routine that I have perfected over the years.

"This is how you get from straightened heat-styled hair, back to curly again without giving yourself more damage"

Lana explained how people can cause irreversible damage to their hair when they are trying to go from straight to curly.

She said: "I think most people know that you can damage your hair with heat but I don't think many people understand that you can damage your hair during the process of going back to curly hair.

"It is so wild but you can make the situation worse when you are trying to get your curls back."

The YouTuber advised four steps for people to take to achieve very nice-looking curls in their hair.

Lana said: "The first step is to pre-poo, that has to be done. This is so essential in any routine where you are going back to curly hair from straightened hair.

"If you were to just go straight in and wash your hair without a pre-poo, that would be you dumping a load of water on your hair when your hair is so thirsty, it is really just going to gulp all of that down and it can literally drown.

"Thirsty hair will open up to receive all of that water, you can think of this as literally opening the floodgates and allowing this water in and if you just dump the water straight on the hair, it is going to soak it all up.

"So when the water enters that hair shaft, it can make the hair shaft swell up to absorb all of that water and that can be very damaging because if your hair shaft swells up to more than 30 per cent of its original size, that is irreversible damage."

Lana explained after pre-pooing, you should gently cleanse, condition and nourish your hair.

She advised: "Use just warm water, nothing too hot. We're being very gentle on the hair.

"Style your hair in a way that is going to encourage the curls to spring back and also keep them hydrated and nourished."

The expert said to lightly brush your hair with a tangle tweezer just before adding gel to release the curls.

Lana said: "Brush through your hair at an angle as it puts a bit of tension on one side and it really encourages the ringlets to form.

"I do all of mine facing inwards towards my face so on both sides, come inwards towards your face. Put some gel on, for me, it always works best if you don't run the gel through your hair and just scrunch it into the ringlets."
