Traction alopecia can "lead to the development of bald patches"

While regular trips to the hair salon ensure your locks are in good condition, maintaining healthy habits at home is also essential.

A dermatologist shared the "common hair care mistakes" you may not realise are damaging your hair, including the hair tie that is "traumatising" your tresses.

Speaking on TikTok, Dr Daniel Sugai shared that "tight hairstyles will cause traction alopecia and lead to permanent hair loss".

Traction alopecia - a type of hair loss caused by constant pulling - can "lead to the development of bald patches", warned the British Skin Foundation.

The use of a specific hair tie can compound this further, with Dr Sugai urging women to stop using clear elastic hair bands to "pull back" their locks.

He said: "These rubber bands are so traumatising and can cause hair loss as well."

But this doesn't mean that women must wear their hair down in order to maintain healthy tresses. They should just make sure they are using suitable bands.

The expert emphasised the importance of securing your hair with "soft scrunchies" instead of ones that cause tearing.

One expert highlighted the importance of avoiding certain damaging hairstyles, naming two that can cause the hair to "break and fall out".

Another dermatologist-approved tip is to stop using a hairdryer on its highest heat setting.

The dermatologist stated: "This can cause hair loss because when you put a heat source on wet hair, little steam bubbles form in the hair shaft and that leads to increased hair breakage."

The same goes for straightening wet hair. It's important to wait until your hair is dry before using this type of tool.

Using a heat protectant is also essential when utilising hot tools. The hair gurus at L'Oreal Paris confirmed this: "When it comes to creating the best hair care routine, a heat-protectant spray is key.

"The main benefit, of course, is that it will protect your hair from heat damage, which means no more crispy, singed ends.

"Less damage means that less breakage will occur during styling and your hair will continue to grow long and healthy."

Another hair expert shed light on the hair care practice she would avoid at all costs, naming the style she would "definitely not" wear to bed as part of a healthy routine.
