Some hairstyles and hair accessories are best avoided to protect your hair
Daily styling can weaken our hair, with heated styling tools well-known for wreaking havoc on hair.
However, experts discussed how another common style - tying your hair up - can also cause it to appear frizzy and damaged.
This doesn't mean you should avoid putting your hair up completely, but opting for a tight ponytail and using elastic bands could lead to unhealthy locks, luxurious hair extensions experts at Roxy Hair said.
They said: "It’s important to be conscious of the products you’re using. While elastic hair ties are an easy and affordable option, they often cause your hair more harm than good.
Experts shared advice for wearing your hair up
GETTY"Due to the high amount of friction they place on your hair particles, elastic hairbands tend to increase the risk of frizz. They can also result in damaged-looking and tangled hair, especially when applied too tightly."
While a high ponytail or slicked-back bun in a fashionable hairstyle, using elastic hair ties to achieve this look can tug at your hair, ultimately causing strands to weaken.
Ditching elastic in favour of a silk hair tie or using a claw grip are more gentle ways to get the hair off your face, the experts continued.
They said: "Instead, why not try using silk or satin hair ties? These products are much gentler for your hair, reducing the risk of damage.
"They also allow your hair to maintain its natural moisture, keeping it looking healthy and hydrated. Scrunchies are another fantastic product to use during a workout, as they keep your hair in place without being too tight."
Silk hair products, such as ties, scrunchies or bonnets, are gentle on the hair, making them a good option for anyone with delicate or thin hair, or locks prone to frizziness.
They have also been known to minimise frizz and reduce breakages and split ends. Being more gentle means they can also prevent creases and kinks in your hair.
