A plant expert has broken down how to coax peace lilies into bloom

Peace lilies are appreciated for their elegant white flowers and lush green foliage, but they don’t always put on a showy display.

The tropical blooms, scientifically known as Spathiphyllum, can take ages to push out new spades when brought home from the store.

Although the plants thrive in various indoor settings, one expert stresses the importance of finding the right temperature and fertiliser.

YouTuber Plant House and Garden claimed she coaxed her peace lily into flowering after moving her plant to a cooler spot.

“I’m excited to share with you two simple tips that helped me get my peace lily to bloom and achieve beautiful flowers,” the plant enthusiast shared.

“Peace lilies are tropical plants that need specific care to flower. They thrive in high humidity, and consistent moisture, and respond well to a slight drop in temperature for blooming."

She noted that when moved to a colder environment, the plant often responds by pushing out blooms.

“I moved mine to a cooler spot in my home where the temperature was around 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit," she shared.

“This cooler environment helped kickstart the blooming process.”

Once the plant has been relocated, close attention should be paid to its lighting and watering needs.

“I placed mine about a meter away from a north-east facing window,” said the YouTuber, noting that this ensures the plant receives gentle and indirect light.

Cooler temperatures naturally mean the plant needs less water, the expert added.

The second hack, according to the content creator, is fertilising with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

“After two weeks in the cooler place, I started using a high phosphorus fertiliser," the expert shared. "I waited those two weeks to give the plant time to adjust to the new cooler conditions before adding any nutrients.

“Phosphorus is essential for flower production, and combining it with the temperature trick gave my peace lily a significant boost."

A fertiliser with a 10-30-10 ratio (nitrogen - phosphorus - potassium), diluted to half strength, is ideal.

Add the fertiliser once the plant has adapted to the cooler environment is also advised. This is when the peace lily will be ready to bloom.

“It provides the nutrients the plant needs to start forming flowers in response to the temperature change,” said the green-thumbed enthusiast.

“I also want to mention that this type of fertiliser not only stimulates blooming but helps produce large and beautifully formed white flowers."
