Now is the time to put more focus onto your lawn

Lawn care goes on the backburner in winter, but with warmer days ahead, it could be time to prepare your grass for the rest of the year.

A lawn expert has shared four essential gardening tasks for March to help revitalise gardens after the winter months.

The first task gardening expert Chris McIlroy, from The Grass People, recommended is preparing for sowing, whether for new lawns or repairing patches.

He said: "Sowing season is upon us, and now is a great time to get your seedbeds ready. The ideal seedbed is free from weeds, moss and other debris. The area should be level and have adequate drainage.

"Using a weed and moss killer before you begin seeding will give your grass seed the best chance of successful germination. This should be applied around two weeks before reseeding or overseeding, so it has time to work."

Next, the expert suggested light scarification as the next task to complete. This process helps loosen and remove thatch that has built up over winter.

Chris said: "Avoid aggressive raking if there's still a chance of frost." Scarification is beneficial for most green spaces, helping to prepare the lawn for healthy spring growth.

It's a gentler alternative to using weed killer for lawns that are in relatively good condition despite winter damage.

Aeration forms the third crucial task. This process helps relieve soil that has become compacted during winter.

He said: "Aeration is particularly important in high-traffic areas. Compacted soil restricts root growth and reduces water absorption.

"This process creates small holes which allow water, oxygen and nutrients to flow and reach grass roots. For best results, aerate when soil is moist but not waterlogged."

Using a garden fork or aerator can significantly improve drainage and promote healthier grass growth.

The fourth essential task is overseeding to fix bare patches that developed over winter.

The expert continued: "Grass naturally thins over time, and overseeding helps restore its density, improving both appearance and durability.

"To give the new seed the best chance of success, rake over the area lightly to break up the soil and remove debris.

"Aim for a rate of 35g of seeds per square metre. Scatter the seeds efficiently and use a rake to make sure they have space to grow.

"Three pound coins stacked is the right depth for your seeds to access water, heat and sunlight.

"Keep the area moist in the weeks following overseeding, as consistent watering is key to germination."
