A gardening expert has shared some of the outdoor jobs Britons should start doing now to prepare for the year

With cold weather spreading across the UK, gardening will be the last thing on the minds of many.

However, an expert explained why now could be the perfect time to start preparing the garden for the warmer months.

Head gardener at Raby Castle Tim Marshall shared the jobs worth doing.

He told GB News: "Looking after your garden in January is an important step in preparing for the upcoming growing season."

Clearing the garden of any debris that has fallen over winter can be a good place to start, the expert commented.

He said: "Start by clearing any fallen leaves and debris from your garden beds and lawns.

"This will prevent potential disease and also make way for new growth.

"Prune any dead or damaged branches from trees and shrubs."

It could also be the perfect time to prepare the soil, depending on the weather.

Tim continued: "Check the soil moisture level and ensure it is not too wet. If the ground is workable, lightly fork or till the soil to improve aeration and drainage.

"Add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to replenish nutrients."

It's not too early to start growing food either, as this can be done in a greenhouse or controlled space.

The expert added: "If you have a greenhouse or sunny windowsills, you can start sowing seeds indoors under controlled conditions.

"Popular choices for January include tomatoes, peppers and herbs.

"Follow the instructions on the seed packets for optimal sowing depth and spacing."

Gardening expert Monty Don shared advice for those hoping to grow beautiful tulips.
