GB News celebrated National Sausage Roll Day in the best way possible

To mark National Sausage Roll Day today, GB News decided to settle one of the most pressing questions in life: is Greggs's vegan sausage roll as good as the meaty original?

The beloved British bakery kindly delivered 34 sausage rolls - 17 meat and 17 vegan - to a hungry team of journalists.

It wouldnā€™t be fair to tell the team which was which, so we conducted a blind taste test.

When it came to taste, texture, look and smell, the meaty rolls came out on top - but only by a tiny margin.

We thought the Sausage Rolls were 'wonderful', 'buttery', 'well seasoned' and 'juicy'

Greggs Sausage Roll: 3.9/5

The meaty sausage roll - named Sausage Roll One in our taste test - scored an average score of 3.9 out of a maximum score of five.

The team immediately recognised that the sausage roll was meat-filled rather than a vegan alternative.

Describing the smell as "inviting" and "delicious", Greggs definitely did a good job of making the team hungry.

They were impressed with its "lovely flaky" texture and gave it top marks for its "golden" appearance. One fan even said it looked "expensive".

The satisfied reporters called the snack "wonderful", "buttery", "well-seasoned" and "juicy".

Greggs Vegan Sausage Roll: 3.7/5

Sausage Roll Two was Greggs's Vegan Sausage Roll. It received an average score of 3.7/5.

The team unanimously agreed that the meat version was more aesthetically appealing. The vegan variety lacked the golden hue of its meatier counterpart.

As for texture, the word "flaky" was used several times, and it was messier to eat than the meat version.

The team were somewhat divided on taste. A disgruntled taster called it "mediocre", while another gave it a rather scathing review of "fake". However, it also received glowing reviews such as "surprisingly tasty", "salty and hearty", "gorgeous" and "pretty close to the real thing".

Nevertheless, it ended up with a very similar overall score to the "original", proving that meat enthusiasts can still enjoy a vegan alternative.

After Patrick Christys put popular supermarkets to the test with his Easter Egg review earlier this year, we asked him to help out with our investigation.

Introducing Patrick to his very first Greggs (we couldn't believe it either), he guessed which was meat and which was vegan, then determined which one blew him away.

Now a die-hard Greggs fan, he'll likely be heading to his local bakery for more.

As for my verdict, I'd happily eat both. My preference is the golden, hearty Sausage Roll, but the Vegan Sausage Roll is pretty delectable too.

For those keen to snap up a sausage snack, both the Greggs Sausage Roll and Vegan Sausage Roll are typically priced at Ā£1.20 depending on your local store.

To celebrate National Sausage Roll Day, Greggs gave some lucky - and hungry - customers across the UK the chance to try a yard of sausage rolls.
