National Highways is urging motorists to act and ensure they are not hit with extra fines

Drivers were given until August 31 to update their payment card details on the website, allowing them to use the Dartford Crossing without paying a fine.

This extension applies to any drivers who made crossings of the Dartford Tunnel from July 27 after the introduction of a new payment system.

Two new companies are now involved with the Dartford Crossing to manage the payment system and handle enquiries for Penalty Charge Notices (PCN).

The Dartford Crossing has a total design capacity of 135,000 vehicles a day, but can carry more than 180,000 on its busiest days.

Motorists will normally need to pay the charge if they use the Dartford Crossing between 6am and 10pm including weekends and bank holidays.

British motorists will not need to pay if they cross on a motorcycle, moped or quad bike.

There is also an exemption for people with disabilities who can get free UK vehicle tax, which will be checked automatically when they cross.

Any cars, motorhomes or minibuses with nine or fewer seats will pay a one-off payment of £2.50 or £2 if they have an account.

Larger vehicles with two axles can either pay £3 or £2.63 with an account, with the most expensive charge being levied on vehicles with more than two axles paying £6 for a one-off payment.

A spokesperson for National Highways told GB News: "If you are a Dart Charge account holder who regularly makes crossings – or has made a crossing since Thursday 27 July - it's vital that you update your payment card details as soon as possible.

“By taking a few minutes to do this today will ensure you're able to continue to use the crossing seamlessly and hassle-free.

"The easiest way to re-validate the card you use to pay is by logging onto Dart Charge.

“By neglecting to act will result in your crossing not being paid for, potentially leading to a Penalty Charge Notice."

If drivers fail to update their payment card details and pay for crossings, it will result in them entering the enforcement process.

Any motorists who made the crossings between July 27 and August 15, customers will have to act once they receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

Drivers will then have 14 days after getting the PCN to pay the Road User Charge (RUC) at the standard rate.
