Exercise can speed up weight loss results while burning fat and building muscle

Exercise and diet go hand in hand when creating a calorie deficit and losing weight.

An expert spoke exclusively to GB News to share some of the best exercises for weight loss, including cycling, swimming and resistance training.

Exercise alone is not enough to help Britons lose weight, but it can help burn calories and increase their metabolism.

High-intensity exercises can burn calories more quickly and are often recommended when trying to slim, registered dietitian at Dietitian Fit Reema Pillai explained.

She said: "When looking at workouts to help with losing fat, there are no targeted exercises that are specific for fat loss.

"Instead, exercising can help with creating a deficit, as you will be burning energy.

"Higher intensity or longer duration of exercises are typically advised for helping to lose weight, as these can burn the most energy. For example, cycling or swimming or speed walking for a long period of time."

High-intensity exercise is not for everyone, however, so weight training can be a good alternative to this.

While lifting weights does not burn as many calories in as short a time, it can increase the muscle mass in the body, ultimately boosting the metabolism.

The metabolism is the rate at which the body burns calories, so the faster this is, the easier it will be to lose weight.

Reema continued: "Another way that working out can help with fat loss is by increasing your muscle mass.

"Resistance and weight training will strain the muscles, and with the right diet, allow muscle mass to increase.

"It’s a very slow process, but the higher a person’s muscle mass, the higher their metabolism is – which is the energy burnt at rest, each day.

"So, to help improve the calorie deficit, including regular weight training into your exercise is advised, as long as long sessions of cardiovascular exercises.

"This comes as experts claimed slimmers can lose weight with a diet plan that "trains your body to burn fat".

Following a time-restricted intermittent fasting plan can be beneficial for those looking to slim down.
