Weight loss is possible without cutting carbohydrates out completely

Carbohydrates are often vilified in weight loss strategies, but there may be ways to circumvent their unfavourable effects on the waistline.

Simple carbohydrates packed with sugars are typically the worst for the body in regards to staying slender.

Rice doesn’t have a particular weight gain or weight loss property, but as a carbohydrate, it can cause a spike in blood sugar.

This blood sugar spike ultimately leaves the body feeling hungrier and causes most people to derail from their weight loss goals.

One slimmer named Kiki Verk claims she lost 60lb (more than 4st) without abstaining from rice, and credits three hacks for allowing her to eat carbs.

“Most people ask me this including my yoga teachers, where do you get all your energy from? And a huge part of this comes from regulating my blood glucose levels," she said in a TikTok clip.

“These are the three carbohydrate hacks that I use to regulate my blood sugar."

The three hacks involve:

  • Adding acetic acid (apple cider vinegar) to rice
  • Adding healthy fat (butter/ghee) to rice
  • Letting the rice cool down for between 12 to 24 hours then reheat to create resistant starch

There is substantial evidence that the acetic acid in apple cider vinegar prevents blood sugar spikes after a meal in healthy subjects. It does this through two mechanisms.

On the one hand, it lengthens digestion by slowing down the time it takes for food to reach the intestine. On the other hand, it controls blood sugar levels with its enzymes.

Fat, protein and fibres also slow down the digestion of carbohydrates and delay their absorption in blood.

Letting rice cool reduces the effect on blood sugar as the structure of carbohydrates is reorganised and the starch becomes more resistant.

Furthermore, reheating the starches reduces the rise in blood glucose by 50 per cent.

Curt Chavez, a 25-year veteran in the fitness industry who provides honest fitness advice and coaching, broke down the science behind the simple carbohydrates.

He told GB News: “Using the glycemic index as a guide, the higher the carbohydrate in this chart the better it is for you in moderation.

“A good rule of thumb is if you can eat the carbohydrate right off the vine tree, it is better for you, with the exception of some fruit which contains high levels of fructose or sugar.

“The harder it is to process a carbohydrate like rice, pasta and/or potatoes, the more starch is contained in the carb.

“Starch is easily converted into simple sugars such as glucose which if you are not burning turn into belly fat pretty quickly as storage.”
