The cost of running a vehicle has become one of the most important factors for drivers

New research has revealed which second-hand cars are the most reliable as drivers look to slash their motoring costs and avoid expensive repairs.

With the ongoing cost of living crisis and the ever-fluctuating cost of motoring, drivers have made a conscious effort to reduce spending to keep them behind the wheel and on the road.

New data has uncovered which second-hand cars can help motorists reduce their costs while still having the right vehicle to suit their needs.

According to the Warrantywise Reliability Index, the Honda CR-V is ranked as the most reliable used SUV with an overall score of 85 out of 100.

The vehicle has been praised for its consistent performance and low maintenance costs, making it suitable for families looking to cut costs.

The Reliability Index is based on a range of criteria, including repair costs, the frequency of repairs and overall reliability scores.

Following the Honda CR-V is the Mitsubishi Outlander with a score of 81 and the Dacia Duster receiving a 79 rating, as both vehicles provide a dependable experience.

SUVs have become increasingly more popular across the UK and the rest of the world in recent years as drivers prioritise luxury, safety and space for their growing families.

They can also be easier to drive, with motorists having a better, elevated view of the road while being aided with a plethora of added features like parking assistance.

This can be seen in sales data with SUVs expected to generate £15.3billion in revenue by 2024, significantly outpacing estate car registrations, which plummeted to just 110,000 last year.

Antony Diggins, managing director of Warrantywise, said: "The Honda CR-V’s top ranking [in the Reliability Index] confirms its reputation as a dependable and trustworthy choice.

"In a time when families need their vehicles to be as reliable as possible, especially with the increasing demands of daily life, having a car that consistently performs without unexpected breakdowns is invaluable."
