The German manufacturer announced that it would be recalling more than 720,000 vehicles amid fears internal issues could lead to an increased risk of fire.

According to the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump could be exposed to water and short circuit.

The filing states that 720,796 potential units are affected by the electrical short increasing the risk of a fire, with 18 customer complaints being made as of August 2024.

BMW has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the injury, resulting in the "voluntary safety recall" this month.

Impacted vehicles include popular X1 and X5 models, as well as some 5-series sedans, ranging from 2012 to 2018.

The recall will see dealers inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector, in addition to the installation of a protective shield for free.

The issue was first identified in March this year following an incident reported by the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in what was described as a "thermal event".

Tesla

The Elon Musk-led brand announced that it would be recalling 9,136 of its popular Model X vehicles from 2016.

This was in response to reports that the "front and centre roof cosmetic trim pieces may be adhered to the vehicle without primer".

Tesla acknowledged that the trim could separate from the vehicle when on the road, which could create a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash.

This will present Tesla with a fresh headache as it represents a rare physical recall for the automaker, given that most recalls simply require a software update.

If someone is impacted by the recall, a Tesla service will test the roof trim adhesion and reattach the trim pieces as necessary, for free.

Tesla stated that it had identified 40 warranty claims, six field reports and 125 service reports in the United States that "are related to or may be related to this condition".

This follows a similar recall notice announced at the end of July. More than 1.8 million of its electric vehicles were recalled in response to fears that the unlatched bonnet could see it fully open, almost completely obscuring the driver's view of the road ahead.
