'Nobody is trapped however there are lane closures in place and disruption is expected in the area'

Britons are being warned of travel chaos this morning after multiple lorries were involved in a serious accident along a major motorway, with traffic building as rush hour gets underway.

Three of four lanes on the M6 northbound between J18 Holmes Chapel and J19 Tabley in Cheshire have been forced to close after a major incident earlier today.

This comes after a collision involving multiple lorries, with National Highways warning of delays and congestion following the accident near Knutsford.

The latest update from National Highways: North-West states that "complex recovery and clear-up works remain ongoing", with traffic only passing the scene in one lane of four.

Drivers will also face long delays in excess of 90 minutes on the northbound portion of the motorway as work continues, with around six miles of disruption.

Road traffic experts Inrix stated: "Three lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident, five lorries involved on M6 Northbound from J18 A54 Middlewich Road (Middlewich/Holmes Chapel) to J19 A556 (Knutsford)."

The collision originally involved two lorries, which subsequently resulted in a large spillage across the road.

All emergency services are on the scene following the collision, with National Highways traffic officers assisting with traffic management.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Emergency services are at the scene of a road traffic collision involving five heavy goods vehicles on lanes 1-3 of the Northbound carriageway of the M6 between J18 and J19.

"Nobody is trapped however there are lane closures in place and disruption is expected in the area."

Cheshire Police have reported that one person is believed to have sustained "serious injuries".

They have been taken to Royal Stoke Hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening following the crash which took place just after 4am this morning.

The National Highways website estimates that the event is expected to clear between 11.30am and 11.45am.

However, normal traffic conditions are not expected to return to normal until the afternoon, with predictions of between 12.30pm and 12.45pm.

The traffic management organisation has urged drivers to allow for extra time on their journey and told them they may wish to re-route or delay their journey.

It has also urged motorists to stay updated on the situation via its social media channels.
