Motorists who hope to celebrate November 5 in its entirety should make sure that they have their licence and registration

Drivers have received an urgent warning ahead of Bonfire Night as a common mistake could leave motorists with a whopping £300 fine.

Motoring experts at Swansay Motor Group have outlined essential legal and safety measures for drivers to follow just days before the evening of pyrotechnics.

Drivers "caught with over 56kg of fireworks without the required licence or registration" risk receiving six penalty points.

They could also land themselves with a £300 fine and their insurance subsequently being void.

Drivers hoping to transport fireworks have instead been told to check with their insurance providers that they have the necessary coverage.

SMG experts also urged drivers to watch out for moisture building up inside their cars if they have fireworks inside.

Damp fireworks are at risk of leaking explosive material.

This could make them more unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

The experts added: "Fireworks should always be supervised in the car, as this increases the risk of them becoming unsafe."

SMG director Matt Springhall said: "Bonfire Night should be a time of joy and celebration, but it’s important that safety remains above all else.

"Not following regulations can have serious consequences, especially surrounding firework transportation and storage.

"The rule isn’t about stifling celebration, but protecting everyone on the road.

"Sometimes we forget, but fireworks are explosive materials and therefore carry inherent risk."

Despite much excitement about November 5 celebrations, many will remember the problems encountered by Leicestershire revellers last year.

Around 300 cars ended up getting stuck in the mud for hours at a makeshift car park at Cattows Farm near Ibstock.

In a social media post at 9.35pm, charity Leicestershire & Rutland 4x4 said that the mud was "so bad that even our responders are struggling to access parts of the fields".
