'That's more insulting than just simply refusing to cover you'

A driver has been left stunned after they were quoted more than £45,000 for their car insurance, highlighting issues with expensive policies.

Posting on Reddit, the driver showed a quote of their car insurance policy from a major insurer, showing a total cost of £45,609.43.

The driver, who posted on the CarTalkUK subreddit, said they had received the "get lost" price quote when trying to insure their Porsche Cayman.

The quote also included free legal expenses but excluded the bonus allowing the motorist to drive other cars.

It also outlined how the quote was bespoke to the driver in question, their personal information and their motoring history.

It added: "We think it will provide cover you can be confident in, and unbeatable value for money."

Many in the comments of the r/CarTalkUK subreddit were quick to poke fun at the astronomical quote price, including the original poster.

In response to the quote being "unbeatable value for money", they wrote: "I was planning to write it off five times in a year so they weren't far off."

Another wrote: "That's more insulting than just simply refusing to cover you."

A second commenter added: "You should phone them back and say you’d like to go ahead with it just to hear the reaction and inevitable sound of someone falling off a chair!"

A third said: "There's definitely an irony that you couldn't drive my 1.2l Punto with your £46000 insurance, but I could drive your Cayman with my £400 insurance!"

According to insurance data from Confused.com, the average car insurance policy costs £941 - a £54 drop compared to the final three months of 2023.

This rises dramatically for those living in the capital, with average prices rising to a staggering £1,501 - more than double the average price in South Wales (£734).

However, younger drivers are hit with the most expensive policies, with the average 17-year-old being quoted £2,919, while £3,145 is the average quote for 18-year-olds.

For the young adults, they will be facing a 70 per cent hike in the last year, worth £1,300.

Commenting on the expensive prices drivers face when looking to renew their insurance, Louise Thomas, from Confused.com, said drivers would be able to see savings by switching policies.

The expert added: “In the current climate we want to help drivers do all they can to make their insurance more affordable.

"But we know the key to this will be shopping around and seeing what the best price out there is."
