Britons urged to save hundreds of pounds on car insurance by driving the cheapest electric vehicles
PA/GETTY
Motorists could pay as little as £343 for their car insurance with an electric car
New data has found which electric cars are the cheapest for drivers to insure as more motorists decide to ditch their petrol and diesel vehicles.
Car insurance prices have fluctuated massively in recent years as drivers deal with expensive costs and enormous quotes, often being above £1,000.
The most recent data suggested that the average car insurance policy costs £882, while those in London pay an average of £1,404. Younger drivers are bearing the brunt of costs the most, with the average 18-year-old being quoted almost £3,000 for a year of coverage.
However, new research has revealed how 10 popular electric vehicles can help drivers slash their prices by hundreds of pounds a year, potentially to as low as £343.

The Renault Twizy was found to be the cheapest EV to insure
PAElectric cars are becoming more popular as prices fall, more chargers are installed in public and confidence grows in the ability of the batteries.
The Renault Twizy has been crowned as the cheapest electric vehicle to insure, with prices of just £343. The quadricycle is available on Auto Trader for as little as £4,000.
While the two-door EV may not look like a conventional car, it has been used frequently for urban mobility with a range of around 56 miles and a top speed limit of 50mph.
The unconventional Reva G-Wiz compact EV is in second place as drivers would be quoted just over £400 to get it on the road. The Indian-made cars had a range of around 50 miles and remain one of the most infamous models in the world.

Other major brands can also see drivers save on expensive car insurance costs, including the highly-rated Smart Fortwo, the popular Citroen Ami and a British staple in the Mini EV.
Clare Egan, head of motor at Admiral Insurance, acknowledged how the vast majority of electric car drivers would see their running costs increase over the next year with the introduction of Vehicle Excise Duty for EVs.
Because of this, she highlighted the importance of making savings wherever possible, especially with car insurance, which has acted as one of the largest expenses for motorists in recent years.
She added: "We also understand that the cost to insure an electric car will be a big consideration. Our list of the top 10 cheapest EVs to insure is dominated by smaller models and city cars, but remember, your premium isn’t just about the car, it’s about you too."

Motor insurance policies rely on a wide range of factors which could result in different prices depending on who is looking for an insurance policy. Average mileage, the location of the driver and where they park their cars can impact how much a driver pays for their cover.
Egan continued, saying: "We’re seeing more electric vehicles on our roads and more choice whatever your budget. We want to help drivers move over to electric by providing them with useful information when deciding which EV is right for them."
In comparison to the average car insurance policy for an electric vehicle insured with Admiral (£879.78), drivers could end up saving hundreds or potentially thousands of pounds.
