The doctor said: “Lines around the mouth area, sometimes referred to as 'snack lines', are influenced by a combination of dietary choices and repetitive muscle movements.

"A diet high in sugar can accelerate skin ageing through glycation, a process where sugar molecules bind to collagen and elastin, essential proteins for skin firmness and elasticity.

"Over time, glycation degrades these proteins, leading to the formation of wrinkles, sagging skin, a loss of skin radiance and skin elasticity.”

Not only can too much sugar affect your health, it can also wreak havoc on the skin, the doctor explained.

Experts at Novi Health agreed, adding: "Every glucose spike leads to glycation (the ageing process of our body). Glycation leads to many age-related issues.

"When sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin proteins in the skin, the collagen and elastic proteins are damaged and thus unable to properly support the structure of the skin.

"This leads to wrinkles, loss of elasticity and dryness – all of which are characteristics of ageing skin."

There are lots of factors that affect how the skin ages, including genetics, skin care and diet.

A doctor said: "It's extremely important to use an eye cream, both morning and night.

"The skin around your eyes is extremely delicate so it is vital that we look after our eyes properly to achieve youthful, younger skin.

"Remember to always apply your eye cream with your fourth finger as this is the most delicate finger and gently pat the cream in a circular motion around the eye, covering the eyelid and the undereye.

"This will ensure that the entire area is covered while also encouraging an eye lift with the application motion."
