Actor Sebastian Stan has come under fire after he launched a scathing attack on the current state of American politics.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, he declared the nation is "in a really, really bad place" during a press conference.

The 43-year-old actor, who portrayed Donald Trump in the 2024 biographical drama The Apprentice, was promoting his latest project, Fjord, when journalists asked about the president's second term in office.

When the question prompted nervous laughter from reporters present, Mr Stan quickly hit a more serious tone.

"It's just not a laughing matter, to be honest. It isn't," he stated.

The Marvel star expressed particular alarm about developments in American media, citing "the consolidation of the media, censorship, threats, the supposed lawsuits that seemingly never end but don't actually go anywhere."

Mr Stan suggested these warning signs had been apparent for some time, adding: "The writing was on the wall."

Mr Stan's remarks quickly ignited a fierce online backlash, with numerous critics labelling the actor "out of touch" and "elitist."

One critic wrote on X: "Nobody cares what Hollywood thinks about politics! They are NOT the average American!"

Another fumed: "Ahh yes. A multi-millionaire telling people how this country is horrible… By the way, please pay $18 ticket and see my movie."

Several commenters accused the Golden Globe winner of existing within a "Hollywood bubble," with one stating: "These idiots live in a bubble. No real Americans think this way."

Others warned the actor risked alienating half his audience through political commentary.

However, not everyone condemned Mr Stan's public remarks. "It's not Trump, it's the entire super PAC system. Stop getting distracted by Trump, he's a symptom of something bigger," one fan argued.

Mr Stan drew parallels between his own experiences and the pressure faced by prominent television personalities in recent months, such as Stephen Colbert and other late-night TV hosts.

The actor revealed that uncertainty plagued The Apprentice right up until its Cannes debut, with the production team unsure whether the screening would proceed just 72 hours before the festival.

"We went through all of it way before Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert and so on. So, I wish it wasn't like that," he said.

President Trump had attempted to halt the film's release by issuing a cease-and-desist letter to producers, whilst his campaign dismissed the project as "garbage" and "pure fiction."

The president himself branded the biographical drama "fake" and "classless."

Mr Stan's comments come as the Trump family grapples with difficult personal news.

Vanessa Trump, the former wife of Donald Trump Jr, disclosed on Wednesday that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The mother of five shared the announcement via Instagram, revealing she had undergone a medical procedure earlier this week.

"While this isn't news anyone expects, I'm working closely with my medical team on a treatment plan," she wrote.

Ivanka Trump was among the first family members to publicly offer support, commenting: "Praying for your continued strength and a swift recovery. Love you mama."

Vanessa's eldest daughter Kai, 19, posted a photograph with her mother, describing her as the "strongest person I know."

Vanessa, who divorced Donald Trump Jr in 2018, is currently in a relationship with golfer Tiger Woods, who recently completed a rehabilitation programme in Zurich following his arrest on driving under the influence charges in March.
