Sir Rod Stewart delighted fans after he took a break from his tour preparations, which is currently in Germany, to pay his respects to the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

The historic event saw troops from the UK, US, Canada and France attacking German forces in Normandy, northern France, during World War Two.

The mission was originally set to start on 5 June 1944 - the day judged to have ideal conditions for crossing the Channel - but had to be delayed by 24 hours because of storms.

A total of 156,000 soldiers were sent to attack five beaches in Normandy which was the largest seaborne invasion ever attempted, which marked the start of the campaign to liberate Nazi-occupied north-west Europe.

Commemorations for the event began on Wednesday when King Charles III made a speech addressing a crowd in Portsmouth on the eve of the anniversary.

The Hot Legs singer posted an image of himself on Omaha Beach to his Instagram and penned: "On Omaha Beach in between Oslo and Gothenburg concerts paying my respects to all the young men who fought and died for our freedom 80 years ago."

Thousands of loyal fans flooded his comment section, with one praising: "Respect to you Roddy."

"What a great gesture. THANK YOU" another exclaimed as a third penned: "Thank you for your respect, Rod."

"Thank you, Rod, for being you & for showing total respect for those brave soldiers, reminding us all to salute their sacrifice," one proud fan commented.

"God bless you Rod for caring. You are quite the gentleman," another said before a sixth noted: "Thank you Rod for keeping the memories alive of the sacrifice of my Dad's generation." (sic)
