Paul O'Grady 'unexpectedly' died at his Kent home on March 28

Paul O'Grady's death certificate has confirmed the cause of death of the TV and radio presenter who passed away at the end of March.

The 67-year-old's death certificate reveals that he died from sudden cardiac arrhythmia, caused by heart disease.

According to the British Heart Foundation, sudden arrhythmic death syndrome - or SADS - is when a person dies suddenly following a cardiac arrest and no obvious cause can be found.

The entertainer's death is linked to his ischemic heart disease which he has spoken openly about, having endured three heart attacks before the age of 65.

The certificate showed that long-time friend and former PA and agent, Joan Marshrons, registered the O'Grady's death six days after he passed away at home, according to the Express.

O'Grady's husband Andre Portasio said the loss had come as 'unexpectedly' to his loved ones.

"It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening," he said last month.

"We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.

"He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.

"I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years."

O'Grady had previously joked he was "counting his blessings" in regards to his health and said it would be a "miracle" if he reached 60.

He revealed that there was a history of heart disease in his family and had been "expecting" his first heart attack in 2002.

Following the news of his death, it has been suggested that there will have two funerals, with one intimate ceremony for his close friends and family followed by a larger celebration.

His friend Amanda Mealing said that O'Grady would not have wanted his funeral to be a sad day.

"He just told us to have a good time - he'd hate it everyone was mawkish and morose. He would say: 'I don't care. I won't be here! Do what you want'."
