The Back to the Future star presented the Best Film gong

Michael J Fox received a standing ovation from the Bafta crowd on Sunday evening as he took to the stage to present the Best Film award.

Fox had already been applauded by onlookers when he took to the red carpet but his on-stage appearance left the star-studded crowd on their feet.

The Back to the Future star, who's been living with Parkinson's since 1991, was helped to the stage in a wheelchair before he stood at the podium.

He received a standing ovation from stars such as Ryan Gosling, Michael Sheen, Margot Robbie, Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike and many others in the auditorium.

"All five films deserve to win but as has been repeatedly explained to me, there can be only one winner.

"To present it, we have a true legend of cinema. He was the film star of the 1980s his charitable foundation has raised over $2billion, he was Marty McFly in Back to the Future... Michael J Fox."

Fox appeared touched by the lengthy standing ovation before he introduced the award.

Fox said: "Five films were nominated in this category tonight and all five have something in common. They are the best of what we do.

While Oppenheimer fans were quick to express their delight at the film bagging the Best Film awards, several Bafta viewers were left "sobbing" at seeing Fox make his rare public appearance.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one fan said of the moment: "Michael J. Fox deserves his ovation at the BAFTAs. He has battled Parkinson's disease since 1991 and raised awareness and huge amounts of money for this horrendous disease. My own family has been affected by Parkinson’s so hats off to Michael J. Fox."
