The A Place In The Sun star had been planning on how to prepare his young sons for life without him

Jonnie Irwin planned to share a touching message with his children before he died, telling them to have the confidence that they "can do anything".

The A Place In The Sun star was first diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2020 and was given just six months to live last year.

While his children were not told just how sick their father was for a long time, it is understood that the TV presenter shared his heartbreaking dying wishes with them shortly before he died.

Last summer Irwin explained that he was planning to give a final message to his children telling them to "believe in themselves" and to look after one another.

"I want them to believe they can do anything," he told Hello magazine at the time.

"I want them to be confident, but believe in yourselves, because you can do anything… I've seen their capabilities and they're boundless."

The message to his sons read: "Family first, always look after your family. Your brothers, your mother... Put them first.

"Support them, love them, and know that they're so much more important than anyone else."
