Comedian Jack Black's bandmate sparked a furious backlash after making a joke about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The former US President was shot in the ear during an attack at a campaign rally on Saturday which left an audience member dead and two critically injured.

Black, 54, appeared on a Sydney stage hours later presenting his Tenacious D bandmate Kyle Gass, 64, with a birthday cake during their performance.

In a clip which has circulated online, Black instructed Gass to "make a wish," to which he replied: "Don't miss Trump next time."

While the crowd in attendance burst out laughing, others have been left outraged by the "disgusting" joke.

Responding to the online clip which has been widely shared, many have blasted the duo over the quip, which came just hours after the shocking incident.

One person who shared the footage wrote: "Jack Black went on stage with his band over the weekend and his bandmate said 'Don't miss Trump next time' to laughs from the audience.

"A month ago, he was a featured speaker at Biden's fundraiser in Los Angeles. 'We must come together' indeed."

Responding on X, one person fumed: "That's incitement to violence, he should be charged."

"When people tell you who they really are, believe them," another commented.

"Used to like them. Disgusting," a third added, while another posted: "Disgusting and yet many in his wasted audience laughed."

"What a f****d up human being," another remarked, with someone else sharing: "This guy is absolute Human Garbage." (sic)

Speaking to Yahoo News, one of the audience members admitted: "You could hear a couple of 'oohhs,' like too soon sort of vibe. But the vast majority was laughter."

Others have applauded the comment and hit back at the backlash to it, with one person arguing: "They're calling to destroy Jack Black's career over a joke and yet they still paint themselves as righteous.

"Trump's a hateful person with a whole posse of people who'd do terrible things for him. I don’t wish Trump dead, just held legally responsible. He’d be a scary martyr."

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has named the victim of the shooting.

Shapiro, who is a Democrat, offered his prayers to the victim and two other people who were shot by suspected shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks.

The 20-year-old gunman was "neutralised" by Secret Service agents after opening fire at around 6.13pm on Saturday.

Naming the victim, Shapiro said: "We lost a fellow Pennsylvanian last night, Corey Comperatore.

"I just spoke to Corey's wife and Corey's two daughters. Corey was a girl-dad, Corey was a firefighter, and Corey went to church every Sunday.

"Corey loved his community and most especially Corey loved his family. Corey was an avid supporter of the former President. So, excited to be there last night, with him and the community.

"I asked Corey's wife if it would be okay if it would be okay for me to share that we spoke. She said yes. She also asked that I share with all of you that Corey died a hero. That Corey dove on his family to protect them last night at this rally."
