The musician surprised viewers with his mistakes on the ITV quiz show

Jools Holland left ITV viewers "irritated" on Sunday evening as he took part in a festive edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

Jeremy Clarkson was back at the helm for the celebrity version of the favourite, but Holland, 66, left many disappointed when he failed to answer what viewers deemed easy questions.

The pianist got off to a bad start, having to use two lifelines just minutes into his round.

He had to get assistance from the audience about which "Joe" had inspired the country with PE lessons during lockdown, and had to "phone a friend" when asked what the tagline for the classic movie Psycho was.

At the £16,000 point, where he had set his safety net, Jools had the question: "The 'Football for Sale' investigation by the Telegraph newspaper led to the resignation of which England manager?"

The options included Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Sam Allardyce.

"Well, football isn't really my specialist subject but I remember Sven having to leave," Holland pondered.

"I don't know if it was this. So I'm going to try and go for C - because I seem to remember him having to leave. And that is my final answer," he decided.

Unfortunately, the correct answer was Sam Allardyce, and Holland's time in the game was over.

Offering some comfort, Clarkson, 64, confessed: "If it makes you feel any better, I wouldn't have known that."

"Oh, well that does make me feel better," Holland responded gratefully.

"Could I ask this - did anyone in the audience know that?" he asked the crowd, most of whom replied with a resounding "yes".

However, the presenter left with an impressive £16,000 for his chosen charities, which were The Princes Trust and Caring Hands.

Despite this, fans were baffled by Holland's performance, with a flood of them taking to social media to express their disappointment.

"What the heck? Jools Holland used Phone A Friend on the Psycho question? JOOLS HOLLAND?!? I thought he was clever! #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire," one shared.

"God this is painful. it’s starting to irritate me #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire," another admitted.

"Jools Holland proving to be detached from the real world here. #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire," one user penned.

Another posted: "Got nothing but respect for Jools Holland not knowing who Joe Wicks or Joe Swash are, but that Psycho phone a friend is a bit embarrassing."

"Jools Holland showing that he was the wrong choice for 'Celebrity' Who wants to be a millionaire, sadly #whowantstobeamillionaire," another added.

"#WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire I genuinely thought Jools Holland would be much better than this," one viewer confessed.

Some enjoyed Holland's stint on the show though, with one writing: "Love the idea of Joe Biden hosting a P.E. lesson over the internet. #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire." (sic)

Elsewhere, actress Nina Wadia and rugby union presenter Ugo Monye also sat in the iconic seat in attempts to win big for their causes.
