The ITV detective series will soon be wrapping up for good

ITV Vera star Brenda Blethyn has shared a rather bittersweet filming update with fans ahead of the final few episodes.

It was announced in April the 78-year-old would be quitting her role after starring as the beloved detective for 14 years, meaning the upcoming instalments will be the drama's last episodes.

Blethyn took on the role back in 2011 and fans have enjoyed the series ever since, but the actress took to social media earlier this week to share a sad update.

Posting a photo of X of a cake decorated with a camera which read: "Vera," and adorned with berries, stars and biscuits, Blethyn hinted that the end was near.

She wrote in the accompanying caption: "Last few days of filming VERA but we still have time for Macmillan fundraiser."

The charity event seemingly run by the cast and crew prompted cancer charity Macmillan to respond to Blethyn's sweet post.

The official account of Macmillan Cancer Support replied: "Hi Brenda, Thank you so much for your amazing support and for your kind words.

"It really does mean the world to us as, especially when you are filming the last few days of Vera, as we know how busy you must be 'now we're getting somewhere'! Your cake is beautiful - Romina."

Elsewhere, fans flocked to the comments section with supportive messages to the actress following the update, with some left "devastated" by the fact the team has almost wrapped up filming.

"I am devastated this is the last series Brenda, Vera has been my best tv programme for years now. Thank you for bringing this lovely character and show to our screens. Thank you also for thinking of the Macmillan fundraiser," one person posted.

"Just started rewatching Vera from the beginning again. Such a wonderful series of work," another enthused.

"Thank you, pet from a Canadian fan. Wishing you and all the cast and crew all the best. It was a wonderful series," a third remarked.

Someone else added: "Thank you for all the great years of Vera, was such a treat. Best wishes!"

"So sorry this is the very last series. It was an honour and privilege to be an SA in a few episodes and to work alongside you all. Love and Best Wishes," another remarked.

And a sixth added: "Thank you for all the years you gave to bringing Vera to life. As my mum says, there was no one else who would fit the part like you have.

"Beautiful cake, and I hope the final days of filming go well. Please go easy on Kenny though, he's my other favourite." (sic)

Announcing her decision to quit the series earlier this year, the actress stated: "Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I’m sad to be saying Cheerio.

"But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years. I’ll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role.

"The Producers, dream cast and crew have been fabulous and I’m going to miss them, but I won’t forget their huge talent, the camaraderie, laughter or kindness we shared nor the friendship of the people of the north east and our fans worldwide. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
