Gabby Logan was left distraught for 24-year-old gymnast Su Weide who fell off the high bar twice at the Bercy Arena during the Men's Artistic Team All-Around event yesterday - but was branded "insensitive" by viewers due to the Southport murders.

China were in prime position to take home the gold before Weide fell off the high bar twice, giving the medal to their rivals, Japan, who won by 0.532 points.

At the time of the incident, BBC commentator Matt Baker said: "China had a buffer but it wasn’t big enough. That poor lad there. Three big deductions. What a shame for him.

"This is a brutal format, sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t."

Beth Tweddle, who won the bronze medal for Team GB on the uneven bars in 2012, also sympathised with the athlete and said: "The first fall was so uncharacteristic.

"Once you fall you’ve got to pick yourself back up. He did look like he twisted his knee a bit, but from the get-go, he looked very unsettled."

Logan also felt sorry for the gymnast and posted on her X account: "The poor Chinese gymnast who fell twice from the high bar. His teammates have deserted him. He’s bereft. I can’t bear it. He might have just lost them gold."

One annoyed user commented: "FFS Gabby really?…" leaving the BBC presenter to reply and ask: "Really what?"

Noticing the interaction, another user chimed in: "Just a bit hard to get upset about this after the horrible devastating news from Southport today."

The original user replied: "Exactly! Thank you."

"Give her a break, I hadn't even heard about the news in Southport until now," one user interjected and defended Logan before another added: "You're not alone, Gabby.

"I felt exactly the same. I remarked to my husband at the awful way his trainers and the other team members had isolated him." (sic)

X users were annoyed that Logan seemed to dismiss the events which happened in Southport yesterday where a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

The attack took place during a scheduled Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance session - where the attack left three children dead.

Swift released a statement after learning the news of the attack and said on her Instagram story: "The horror of yesterday's attack in Southport is washing over me continuously and I'm just completely in shock.

"The loss of life and innocence, and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there, the families and first responders.

"These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families."
