The anti-Trump comedian has "unequivocally denounced" the assassination attempt on the former President

Bill Maher has ripped apart the Left's "moral high ground" following the Pennsylvania shooting at this weekend's Donald Trump rally.

The former US President, who is hoping to return for another term later this year, was grazed by a bullet on his head while he spoke to fans and supporters at the rally.

The 20-year-old shooter was killed at the scene after shooting at Trump, killing one other attendee and critically wounding two others.

Blood began to pour down Trump's face while Secret Service agents flocked to the stage to shield him before he made a defiant gesture towards his supporters as he was escorted to safety.

Hours after the assassination attempt on Saturday, one of Trump's most vocal critics and one of the USA's best-known comedic figures, Maher, took to the stage at a comedy show.

And the 68-year-old was quick to condemn the actions carried out by the shooter in Pennsylvania and told his fans he would not be using the incident for comedic purposes.

WARNING: The video below contains strong language,

“I unequivocally denounce [the shooting], I don’t care what you think about that. Not funny. I’m sure that there will be jokes that people will make because they hate him so much that they wish it went the other way. Not for me," he told the crowd, who responded with applause.

Ripping into the political consequences of the shooter's actions, he continued: "Whoever did this, the shooter has done so much damage to the Left.

"[The Left] has lost a lot moral high ground in the ‘you’re the violent people’ and the ‘liberals don’t shoot people, liberals don’t solve it that way’ [debate].

"The sort of plank of the Republican Party, which starts their convention tomorrow in Milwaukee, I’ll be there — to go to the strip clubs. The guy who wrote it, he said ‘This is our new plank,’ he said ‘This is our new revolution for America,’ which I’ve heard a thousand times... everybody says there’s a new revolution.

"But they don’t always say what this guy said, which is, he added, ‘It’ll be bloodless, as long as the liberals let it happen.’ Okay, that’s not cool either.

"This s**t has got to stop because none of this violence happens in a vacuum. It's never in a vacuum."

After his call to stop the violence, Maher went on: "I'm glad he's okay, Trump... He's the luckiest motherf****r that has ever walked the face of the earth."

He also unleashed his verdict on what the shooting means for the upcoming election: "When I saw that photo today of him with the blood streaming down his face — I don’t want to say the election’s over but… Anything can happen in an election but Jesus Christ.

"Yes, MAGA nation finally has its full martyr. They loved it when he went to jail. The mug shot. I gotta say, he’s insane and a criminal. But that mug shot? F***ing nailed it. Perfect.

"And he [reacted to the shooting] like he rehearsed it! Take one! There will be idiot conspiracy theorists who will say, ‘Oh they planned it.’ He gets grazed and the other guy gets [killed] — it's so Trump. It’s going to work for him.

"I can see the memes now — ‘the man the libt**ds couldn’t kill.’ Biden can’t get through a debate and a bullet can’t stop Donald Trump. It almost doesn’t matter who the Democrats put up now."

Maher is far from the only public figure to have condemned what unfolded at the Trump rally this past weekend, with the likes of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Sir Keir Starmer and King Charles III issuing statements denouncing what happened.

Trump's likely opponent at this year's election - although there have been calls for Biden to step down - said: "I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania.

"I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.

"Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America.

"We must unite as one nation to condemn it."
