The BBC crime drama left viewers disappointed just minutes into the first episode

New BBC drama The Jetty debuted on Monday evening, with Jenna Coleman starring as the detective of the crime series.

However, fans complained just minutes into the episode as they pointed out constant "mumbling" and noted they were "struggling" to follow the narrative and direction of the opening episode.

A BBC synopsis for the drama reads: "When a fire tears through a property in a scenic Lancashire lake town, Detective Ember Manning (Jenna Coleman) must work out how it connects to a podcast journalist investigating a missing person cold case, and an illicit relationship between a man in his twenties and two underage girls.

"But as Ember gets close to the truth, it threatens to destroy her life – forcing her to re-evaluate everything she thought she knew about her past, present and the town she’s always called home.

"As much a coming-of-age story as a detective thriller, The Jetty asks big questions about sexual morality, identity and memory, in the places that Me Too has left behind."

Just minutes into the drama though, many complained they couldn't understand the "mumbling" characters, and criticised the lack of clarity in the plot.

Taking to X, viewers didn't hold back as they made their feelings on the debut instalment of the series clear.

"#TheJetty Was looking forward to this and love Jenna Coleman but it's not gripping me. Bit slow and boring so far. Prob stick with it though, see where it goes," one person wrote.

"Don’t think this is for me everyone’s horrible and I can’t get into it #TheJetty," a second penned.

Someone else fumed: "Thank f*** it is not just me that is struggling. I turned it off. Incoherent mumble bollocks. Good luck to the rest of you sticking with #thejetty - load a sh***."

Another echoed these complaints as a different viewer asked: "Am I the only one finding #TheJetty hard to pick up? Is it the sound? The accents? Are they mumbling? #BBCOne."

"If anyone can understand a f***ing word anyone is saying then either I am bats*** deaf or you have supersonic hearing. #thejetty," another person shared.

"#TheJetty Thank goodness it's over, struggling to understand what is going on. Next episode is tomorrow but I'm sure I can find something more interesting like watching grass grow. Massive disappointment," another viewer admitted.

Not everyone held this view though, with others praising the intriguing opening to the drama.

One person who took a different view wrote: "The opening episode of #TheJetty was very good indeed.

"And, based on that ending, everyone who watched it will be itching to see ep 2. Another quality drama from the #BBC. @BBCOne." (sic)

Coleman talked about an element of filming the series she "loved" as she reflected on working with her co-star Archie Renaux.

Talking about her character, the actress commented: "Her relationship with her side-kick Hitch, played by Archie Renaux, is really fun.

"I loved filming those scenes with him. She’s quite challenging of Hitch and calls him out all the time, so there’s this constant banter and back-and-forth between them."
