Viewers accused the broadcaster of cranking up "the pressure" ahead of Peaty's race

BBC viewers have slammed the broadcaster for its Sunday evening Olympics coverage ahead of swimmer Adam Peaty's nail-biting 100m race.

The 29-year-old narrowly missed out on a gold medal in Paris on Sunday night, but the BBC dedicated much of the weekend's coverage to the swimmer.

The Olympian seemed to be the main event of the weekend for Team GB, and the BBC made this clear in its coverage of Peaty.

Video footage showed the ups and downs of his personal and Olympic journey as well as chats with his family in the build-up to the 100m men's breaststroke, which began shortly before 9pm on Sunday.

However, several viewers complained about there being a "ridiculous" amount of focus on the father-of-one.

Taking to X, many Olympic fans questioned the level of attention given to Peaty ahead of the swim, accusing the BBC of piling on "the pressure".

One penned: "A bit OTT with the Adam Peaty coverage. The bbc have really cranked the pressure up! #Paris2024."

"Adam Peaty is a cracking swimmer, and he's won 2 Olympic gold medals for 100m breastroke, but the BBC needs to shut the hell up with all the coverage and VT's of him.. there's more than him on the GB team," another fumed.

"The amount of coverage the BBC have given Adam Peaty is unbelievable. I really hope he wins tonight! #Paris2024 #OlympicGames," a third agreed.

Another shared: "The BBC #olympics coverage is all filler very little killer. They've lost the rights to show so much..... I've seen that Adam Peaty VT seven times since yesterday ffs."

"The amount of coverage about Adam Peaty by the fawning BBC is ridiculous. Same films over and over......" another echoed.

However, some enjoyed the coverage and celebration of the swimmer, with one noting: "I have seriously not stopped crying for two hours watching the VTs and coverage from the pool tonight! @BBCSport @clarebalding #Olympic coverage @adam_peaty."

"So impressed with Adam Peaty the person as much as Adam Peaty the swimmer And @clarebalding is in a class of her own by the pool alongside 2 outstanding pundits. @BBCSport at its best with some brilliant VTs too," another added.

Despite the complaints, The Daily Mirror reports that 8.1million people tuned into the BBC to watch Peaty compete in the race.

Peaty struggled to hold back tears not long after the race in which he narrowly missed out on his third successive gold medal.

He took second place in the men's breaststroke final by just 0.02 seconds. Speaking to BBC Sport, he reflected: "I'm so happy that I can race the fastest in the world and still come second.

"I'm not crying because I lost, these are happy tears because I said to myself I would give it everything I've got and I have. And I can't be upset about that."
